September 9, 2006
Kortney's Challenge inaugural event, was held on September 9, 2006 in Oceanport, NJ. It was a two mile family fun run/walk that kicked off the Oceanport's Summer's End Festival.
Some people ran, some walked, some children were pushed in strollers, but everyone had fun! We had an fantastic turnout for our first event with 511 registrants. We also included what we called a "Pet Parade" to capture Kortney's love of stuffed animals.Everyone was invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal to walk with. Many of the children who participated carried animals that were originally Kortney's that they received as a remembrance of their friend.
One of Kortney's friends felt compelled to do more than just walk and sold Italian ices at the Summer's End Festival so she could donate the proceeds to the foundation.
The over $8500 raised from race registration, Italian ice sales, raffled items, and general donations all went toward the purchase of additional playground equipment for "Kortney's Playground" at Wolf Hill Elementary School in Oceanport. (See related story under the "Press" section.)
