Second Annual Kortney Rose Foundation Spring Dinner/Dance
A wonderful evening of was had by the over 150 attendees at this year's dinner/dance held on May 16, 2008 at Gibbs Hall. The event was sponsored by World Subaru of Tinton Falls and Pound Puppies. The baskets were overflowing from the generosity of many donors. Special thanks goes to all of the many volunteers who helped make the evening a success. This event would not be possible without the ongoing support that we receive from the community and our volunteers.
One of highlights of the evening was when Dr. Peter Phillips, Director or the Neuro-Oncology Department at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia not only spoke about how our donations are used, but then opened the floor to questions. This allowed for a unique question and answer session that was very informative. (See video)
Many special events took place during the evening. A surprise special guest and celebrity spokesperson was the highlight of the evening as "Tom Cruise" aka actor Evan Ferrante took the stage with Master of Ceremonies Jay Coffey. They did a skit about their previous meeting when "he" (Tom Cruise), shot the War of the Worlds movie in Bayonne where Jay is the borough attorney. (See Video)
Another highlight was presenting the inaugural Kortney Rose Foundation Achievement Award to two very special young ladies for their work on a unique fundraiser called Crabby Mara. In the summer of 2007 Mara and Olivia Bey caught, cleaned, sold and delivered crabs to customers in an effort to donate $200 to The Kortney Rose Foundation. They were so successful and with matching contributions they donated over $4,000. Their efforts were remarkable and we wanted to recognize them thus creating the achievement award. Please visit their website at www.crabbymara.com and if you are local place an order!
I announced at the dinner that thanks to the assistance of Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon we have submitted a bill to the NJ Legislature to have the month of May named Brain Tumor Awareness Month in NJ. The final vote is days away but I am assured that it will be passed.
All in all, over $50,000 was raised from the dinner event for pediatric brain tumor research. Thanks to everyone who attended and/or donated through ad placement, raffle ticket purchases, gift auction tickets or general donations. What a great success!

The Kortney Rose Foundation is Proud to Honor MARA BEY as the First Recipient of the 2008 Kortney Rose Foundation Achievement Award
Crabby Mara is a crabbing business started by 13-year-old Mara Bey in the summer of 2007. The following is quoted from her website, www.crabbymara.com:
"This is a business where I catch and clean crabs right off of my dock on the Shrewsbury River. Then I deliver them right to your door. The purpose of this business is to raise money for the Kortney Rose Foundation. Kortney Rose Gillette was a friend of my little sister's. She had a Pediatric Brain Tumor and died on April 27, 2006. She was only 9 years old. This organization was started by Kortney's mother, Kristen Gillette, and is dedicated to raising funds to support research and education related to the cure and treatment of Pediatric Brain Tumors. 50% of my proceeds will go to her foundation. My goal for the first year of Crabby Mara is to raise 200 dollars."
